Description, habitats and behaviors
The African Golden Wolf was previously classified as an African variant of the Golden Jackal, which is morphologically very similar, but it possesses a more pointed muzzle and sharper, more robust teeth. Its size varies between 7 and 15 kg for a height of 40 cm at the withers. The coat color is somewhat variable, but the typical coloration is sand to silver-grey, with black patches on the shoulders and the tip of the bushy tail. The golden wolf shows an ability to live in various habitats. Its social organization is very flexible, varying according to food availability and distribution. It feeds mainly on small prey such as hares and rodents, invertebrates, and fruits.
Status in the world and in the region
The Golden Wolf is listed in the "Least Concern" (LC) category, according to the IUCN Red List criteria. The species is the most widespread carnivore in Tunisia. Its presence in the region is very common. Often the golden wolf is at the heart of regional news; it fascinates as much as it frightens.
