Upon arriving in Smar, continue south on the Gasr Aoun road which crosses the Sebkhat.
Site Description
North-east of Tataouine, Jebel Rehach stands out from the mountain system in the Jeffara plain with an East-West orientation. Here, one discovers a unique landscape sculpted by erosion in sandstone rocks. Stripped of all vegetation, the exclusively "mineral" landscape resembles a lifeless planet. It served as a filming location for parts of "Star Wars."
Geologically, these outcrops are red and dark hematitized Triassic sandstones, appearing as consolidated banks or cross-stratified bundles. At the edges of the sebkhat, red or sandy and ferruginous clays are interstratified.
