Description, habitats and behaviors
The Red Fox is a medium-sized carnivore. It is recognizable by its elongated muzzle, triangular and upright ears, its long bushy tail with a whitish tip, and its pale red coat. It measures between 45 and 90 cm in length and between 35 and 50 cm in height at the withers for a weight between 3 and 14 kg. The red fox is a generalist species that adapts to very varied environments, even settling on the margins of human settlements. It lives in family groups. Its diet consists of small prey, reptiles, invertebrates, bird eggs, and even fruit. The red fox is known for its competitive power. It enters into competition with various species of canids.
Status in the world and in the region
The red fox is listed in the "Least Concern" (LC) category, according to the IUCN Red List criteria. The species is the most common of the foxes in Tunisia and is visible in the region. In the collective memory, the fox has the reputation of being clever and cunning.
